GLOOMY SUNDAY

Broken heart has always been as unique as it is banal as has been overexploited for century upon century in the history of art and music.

Nevertheless, every time when this happens to us – we (surprisingly) experience it as the most important and unique – yet slightly shaming and hard to describe state.

Gloomy Sunday talks about pop cultural exploitations, intimidating degradation of meanings, upon hunger for the few remaining words, phrases or symbols that have not yet been spoiled by pop kitsch and banality.

A delicate XIX century irisated porcelain cup, with a gold-coated handle, decorated with a painting of a couple in love is blown up from the inside by an empty glass bubble.

This pop-culturally degraded experience – here, as a relic is exhibited on a museum pedestal, in a glass cabinet proudly lying on a custom made red velvet regalia cushion. Its place is given back to it.

Music: an original version of Rezo Serez “Szomoru Vasarnap” widely known as: “Gloomy Sunday”/“Hungarian Suicide Song”.

SIZE: 75 x 75x 210 cm

MATERIALS: sound, headphones, original XIXth century irisated porcelain cup, blown glass, red velvet pillow, museal pedestal, glass showcase, 2009
