QUE PUEDO CREAR PARA TI?

installation, steel, sound, headphones, video, sensors, hydraulic bar stools, plates with instructions, 2016

“Que puedo crear para ti?” is one of my responses to and an illustration of deep collective needs of inhabitants of Donostia/San Sebastian that I mapped out during first edition of “What can I make for you?” project.

The deepest collective needs of people of San Sebastian happened to be: empathy, human connection, receptiveness and openness to others, especially in the context of the Franco dictatorship and later the activities of ETA, that divided the society and destroyed mutual trust.

A response delivered by Gabukow took a form of a multimedia space installation with game elements within. It is a tool to learn or train social behaviours; bring the citizens of San Sebastian closer together through training the empathy, trust and receptiveness towards each other.

The installation has been programmed to work only when the participation and a cooperation of two people are completed.

To make the installation work, they have to accomplish simple tasks stated in the provided manual. After successfully following the instruction’s steps (finding a partner, cooperation with another human being, acknowledging his or her presence by establishing an extended eye contact, tuning in together) while sitting in front of each other, they can reflect themselves not only one into another but also in opinions, needs and desires of the fellow citizens that they could hear through the headphones provided.
