GABUKOW

(Gabriela Klara Kowalska)

Born in 1982 in Poland. Graduate of Dudley College in Stourbridge, England (2005) and Eugeniusz Geppert Academy of Fine Arts in Wroclaw (honors diploma in the field of design: Glass design in 2008; Poland). Scholarship holder of the Estonian Academy of Art in Tallinn (2007), the Helsinki University of Art and Design in Finland (2007) and the Pilchuck Glass School in the United States (2010).

Winner of the “Machina Design Awards” (Young Design 2010). She has been awarded twice in the “MakeME!” competition as a part of the Lodz Design Festival. Nominated by the Institute of Industrial Design for the “Good Design 2011” award. Winner of the “Young Poland” Ministry of Culture and National Heritage Scholarship Program (2009). In 2013, along with the whole team of the International Festival of High Temperatures, she was nominated for the “Gazeta Wyborcza” award – “WARTO”. In 2016, as a part of the AIR Wro program (Wroclaw Cultural Zone), she resided in San Sebastian (Basque Country).

Interdisciplinary artist, designer, activist, animator and curator. Co-author of the first in Poland recycling installation for children “reFUN”. Co-founder of the Kofikolektyw collective (2008-2011). Member of the No Muda collective (2011-2012). She co-created PopUp203 – a gallery and creative coworking space (2012-2013). Participant of numerous national and international exhibitions, projects, symposia. residencies and festivals.

Since 2016 she has been carrying out her own long term open project “What can I make for you?” where she researches and creatively responds to the inhabitants’ needs in a given area (San Sebastian 2016, Wrocław 2017, Ukrainian community in Wrocław 2018/2019).

My basic tools of the trade are: acute observation and compassion.
I experiment with form, function, meaning and material.

I work towards generating an experience that provokes reflection, questions or confronts; be it physical small DIY urban architecture, interdisciplinary research, ephemeral interventions in the city structure, workshop, installation, sculpture or a utilitarian product.

The fusion of seemingly incompatible qualities forms the basis of my practice, i.e. scientific methods with intuitive ones; practicality with sensuality, old with new, mass production with craft. I use various artistic means: object, sculpture, installation, design, social/art actions and research. I comment on reality often using poetic and subversive language.

Very often I choose to work on the intersection of art, design and sociology. Humanity fascinates me in their personal and collective experiences. Important for me is the psychological, sociological and cultural context that often generates our instinctive reactions to objects and phenomena.

I feel deeply connected with nature. This is why I popularise ecology and create sustainable, critical and socially engaged design. Social usefulness of my projects is an important value for me.

I often use glass, as it is a material of paradoxes, it contains many conceptual and emotional meanings. Also, as chemically neutral, glass is one of the healthiest materials for humans; it is 100% recyclable and incredibly malleable.

Working with hot glass resembles an alchemic dance, where each movement can be captured in a form I am currently working on. Hot glass forming is also a craft that requires teamwork.
I very much value cooperation and experiment.

I often cooperate with other artists, craftspeople and various production companies combining industry with craft. I believe that making things by hand is much more than just production.

Travelling for me is a source of challenges, questions and inspirations.

I travel a lot. It provides me with a sense of equilibrium as much as it provokes me to absorb different contexts and to build perspective. It also enables me to realise interdisciplinary, socially engaged projects that in principle are to form relations.

In my practice I aim to broaden senses and to create cracks in people’s mind
and perception inviting for reinterpretation.

I create projects and objects that are to connect and build: relations, contexts and interactions. I find satisfaction in job that is well done.
